CHAPTER TEN

I was awakened by the phone ringing. Before I answered, I looked at the clock on my phone. I had been asleep for nearly four hours, but it felt like it had been only five minutes. I felt more exhausted than I had ever felt before. I sat up, rubbed my eyes, and answered.

At first, I didn’t recognize the voice, my mind was still in a fog.

“Who is this?” I asked, burying my head in the pillow.

“This is Miriam. We chatted briefly last night at the café.”

“Oh yeah,” I said, finally waking myself up.

“Sorry, did I catch you at a bad time?”

“No, I needed to get up anyway. I was just taking a nap.”

“I understand.” She paused for a minute. “Listen,” she said carefully. “I was hoping I could come over to chat with you.”

“Me? Sure, but why? What’s up?”

“I just talked to my sister at the hospital—you know, the one I told you about—and she told me some interesting news.”

I sat straight up in bed. “Really?”

“Yes, can I come by to talk to you?”

“Yeah. Yeah, I’ll be here. When can you come? Or would it be easier to meet you someplace.”

“No, I’ll be there shortly. I’m not that far away.”

I could feel the adrenaline pumping through my body. Maybe this was the information that was going to help me understand all of this stuff.

I was downstairs in a flash. I looked for Grams, but she was no longer on the front porch. She had retired to her parlor in the back. I debated whether or not to tell her what was going on, but when I peeked in her door, she was fast asleep. I decided to wait to tell her what was going on. After Mariam left, I’d have more information to share.

I saw Mariam’s car creeping slowly up the drive. She parked right in front of Gladstone and jumped out. I had set a small tray of tea and snacks out, so we could have a nice chat and try to make the most of such a gorgeous day.

“Oh, Annabelle, you didn’t have to go through this much trouble,” she declared as she examined the spread I’d set out.

“No trouble at all. How hard is it to boil water and open a few boxes of crackers?”

She laughed at my sense of humor but turned serious very quickly. “How are you holding up?” she asked after she had settled into her seat.

“I’m doing okay. It’s been a little difficult for me, but I’ve managed to get through it by trying to figure out what really happened.”

She nodded briefly before taking a sip of her tea. “I understand. I can’t imagine what those lads are going through right now.”

“It’s been really hard on them. And it doesn’t help to have them up there without Peggy or Tommy to help them through this.”

“So, Tommy still hasn’t shown up?”

“Nope. Not a word, and I have to admit, I’m getting a little worried. It’s just not like him.”

She lowered her gaze and waited until she had my full attention.
